Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about Linux

We have had many email support questions, virtually none of which have been jBASE problems. In an attempt to cut down the email traffic, we introduce this FAQ to help you get your installation started. Please read this thoroughly before sending email.

  1. What version of Linux should I use?
  2. Why do I get can't find linux/stat.h or some other header file?
  3. Why does the IJU command not seem to work?

Believe it or not, we are getting these questions over and over again, and that's about it. We are getting a number of Linux questions though, and we must apologize, but we cannot answer questions regarding the Operating System. Please consult one of the excellent newsgroups for more information regarding Linux. For jBASE related incidents that you cannot help yourself on here, then please send email to devsup@jBASE.com.

You must have the korn shell (ksh) installed before you install jBASE for Linux, or the installation will fail. In addition, many of the shell scripts included in jBASE require ksh. For more information see the Pre-requisites on the Readme Page.

What version of Linux should I use?

jBASE Software will now look after Red Hat 7.1; Caldera 2.2.14, Mandrake 7, SuSE 7. You are welcome to try loading jBASE on any other version of Linux, however, we cannot guarantee that it will work. Unfortunately when you give something out for free, there has to be a limit on what you can support. You can install Red Hat via FTP from the web, look to www.redhat.com for details.

Note: Most of the documentation on installation of jBASE for Linux references the RedHat Package Manager (RPM) version. This was the original Linux port of jBASE, hence the documentation corresponds. The basic installation outlined on the Linux Installation Advisory can be used as a general Guideline for the installation of other Linux versions. For specific operating system tuning contact the respective vendor:

Red Hat, Caldera 2.2.14, Mandrake 7, SuSE 7

Why does the IJU command not work?

Answer:

You did not have enough permissions on the directory /usr/bin when you did the install. This command is copied to usr/bin on install, but if there are no write permissions on this directory, this cannot be performed. You may well have missed out the umask 0 step of the install.

Stat.h and other header files - where are they?

Answer:

You have not installed the Linux Kernel Source from the Linux installation CD-ROM (or downloaded this from internet). Any Linux installation requires the kernel source code (and therefore header files) be loaded on the system before the C compiler will work correctly. The Linux kernel source code files are a standard Linux package and should be loaded via the standard method for your version of Linux. Please consult your Linux documentation for more details on this.
