jDP Product Updates

From time to time, you will find updates to the documentation, drivers or the jDC program at this web page.

The jDC program and the jDP installed with jBASE Enterprise Edition require that you install Microsoft's MDAC (Data Access Components) on the server system. If you do a full install of IE 5, then you should get this. However, to make sure, you should run the MDAC supplied here.

If you download the latest jDC setup.exe, the pre-requisite Microsoft MDAC 2.6 (mdac_type.exe), will be loaded in the jDC application directory, but the jDC install will not call it. Eventually, we hope to incorporate this in to the jBASE installation, but the package it is currently delivered in by Microsoft prevents this as it can decide to reboot the system without warning, causing the jDC install to be terminated prematurely. Hopefully, Microsoft will provide the MDAC installation in the form of a Windows Installer merge module, shortly.

The jDC application directory is usually:

    <windowsdrive>:\jBASE 30\jDC

After the jDC install completes, you should locate and run the file mdac_typ.exe. The mdac_typ.exe file (English version) may also be downloaded directly from this page, or you may download this file and the SDK from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/data/download_260rtm.htm :

Currently available updates are:

jDC Install Updated Sep 8, 1999
Microsoft MDAC 2.6 Updated Nov 10, 2000

If you have an earlier version of jDC installed on your system, please uninstall it before loading this version.

If you have not loaded a version of MDAC onto your system, or you are not sure if you have the latest version installed, you will need to run the mdac_typ.exe that is provided within the setup.exe and loaded into same location as jDC.exe, before jDC and jDP will function correctly. If in doubt, run it anyway.

The latest MDAC is available from this page and if you are in any doubt as to whether you have the latest version loaded you should download and install this. Eventually, we hope to incorporate this in to the jBASE installation, but the package it is currently delivered in by Microsoft prevents this.

Older versions of Windows, such as Windows 95, do not necessarily have the common windows controls installed that are required to run jDC. The easiest way to 'fix' this, is to install Internet Explorer 5. However, we do not recommend Windows 95 or Windows 98 for use as a jDP administration system to run jDC. While they will work in theory, neither system seems stable enough in our experience.
