The OSMOSiS Product Suite

OSMOSiS is a Rapid Application Development product for MultiValue databases.  OSMOSiS enables the creation of database definitions, screen designs, reports, documents, menu structures, security and much more.  The product has an advanced Windows based GUI user interface.

A unique feature of OSMOSiS is the OSMOSiS Converter, which creates a migration path from other 4GL products.  Existing applications created with proprietary 4GL systems such as System Builder and SB+ can be imported and converted into OSMOSiS formats and conventions using an automated process.  OSMOSiS functionality to automatically generate GUI screens from original character format can be exploited to completely revitalize applications as part of the migration.  The clear benefit to the end user or VAR is that the valuable application can be migrated to OSMOSiS and deployed on jBASE to take full advantage of the new and modern environment.  All the important business logic and value to the business is retained and in fact enhanced by the combination of OSMOSiS on jBASE.


Components

The OSMOSiS Product Suite consists of the following:

OSMOSiS-Developer
OSMOSIS is more than simply a 4GL - it is a total Application Development Framework that allows the developer to turn existing database designs into full fledged GUI applications with the minimum of BASIC code.  The development environment allows the creation of database definitions, screen designs, reports, documents, menu structures, security and much more. All RAD tools are available in Character and Windows graphical modes. Applications created with OSMOSiS-Developer are available in both character-based and Windows client/server modes or a combination of both. 

OSMOSiS-Shell  
Provides the application run time environment and includes a comprehensive terminal emulator for character mode deployment and a full Windows GUI environment.

User queries result in the data being returned to a powerful grid component.  Once in the grid the data can be sorted and grouped and if desired filtered as well.  This information can then be exported to Microsoft Excel, XML or printed with all the formatting retained. Once the data is sent from the Server, all manipulation of the data is performed on the Client and does not require further communication with the Server.

Reports are produced and can take advantage of the same powerful grid component which can then utilize standard desktop tools such as Microsoft Excel, Word -- or by simply saving the data as CSV files to import into any other Windows application the user wishes. 

OSMOSiS-Configure
A comprehensive suite of System Administrator Tools that provide the user with an easy method of managing environment settings, printers and users of the OSMOSiS system.

OSMOSiS-eFax
OSMOSiS eFax is a Windows application that can be configured to send data output from an application as an email, fax or SMS.

OSMOSiS Print Manager
OSMOSiS Print Manager is a comprehensive GUI representative of the MultiValue spooler which looks similar to the Windows spooler.  The benefit is that the user can manage printers and print jobs without any need to understand the MultiValue Spooler commands.

OSMOSiS-SB Converter  
OSMOSiS-SB Converter provides a migration path for applications developed originally in other application generators such as System Builder or SB+ can be imported and converted into OSMOSiS formats and conventions, in a simple fully automated process, with minimal post-conversion work. 
OSMOSiS-SB Converter is a full and comprehensive conversion suite taking all of the original application code, including all files, processes, program source, forms, documents, reports, file updates, transactions and menus and creating both character and Windows-based OSMOSiS applications.

Benefits of OSMOSiS

OSMOSiS RAD tools enable a fast development cycle. The same tools are also available to the Windows’ client providing a growth path for users and developers of older 4GL’s.
 
A fax-server is incorporated in the OSMOSiS Client allowing faxing of any document that would normally print. There is also a link in the OSMOSiS Client for any telephone-type field to send a fax.
 
There is a built-in SMS Message server that allows SMS messages to be sent from any telephone-type field on any screen.
 
OSMOSiS will integrate your default Windows email client to be called-up from any email-type field on the screen, upon request.
 
The default Internet Browser can be called from any WWW-type field on the screen.
 
OSMOSiS enables MultiValue applications to be integrated into the current mainstream of the computing world, away from proprietary environments and into Windows and the Internet.
 
Integration to any other Windows application is made automatically from various routines within OSMOSiS such as reports, document printing and forms.
 
There is an option to make other applications available from the OSMOSiS menu structure.  
 
Substantial business logic has been built into the OSMOSiS graphical mode, including the ability to manipulate data displayed from reports or enquiries in grids.  This allows the grid to be sorted, filtered and grouped on the client system, without recourse to the server.  The data in the grid can be print-previewd, exported to Excel, Word, HTML or XML or a CSV file for importing to most other Windows' products.
